As we start work on what will be an exciting 2016 for Hidden Horizons, it seemed like the logical time to look back on 2015, our second year as a company. Across all areas of what we do it was a very busy year, full of hard work and very enjoyable experiences.
On the consultancy side of our work we worked on projects as far north as Edinburgh with National Museums Scotland and as far south as Dorset with the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. We also worked on projects at Creswell Crags, Leeds Museums & Galleries, The Ryedale Folk Museum, Natural England and Scarborough Museums Trust.
These projects included work on learning in heritage environments, both evaluating and developing packages. We were also asked to look at fossil collecting and acquisition as well as evaluating geodiversity projects, we took part in a collections geoblitz and carried on our relationship with the dinosaur footprints of the Yorkshire Coast.
We were very busy both with our own events programme and also assisting at other events at venues like the Yorkshire Museum and the Yorkshire Fossil Festival in Scarborough. Our own events seemed to be very well received, with fossil hunting trips, rock-pooling, dinosaur footprint walks and mini-beast sessions all seeing lots of bookings, many trips being sold out. We also saw an increase in the number of private bookings both for birthday parties and family days out, and plan to build on this for 2016.
Our School Packages saw more bookings than the year before, both from local schools and those from further afield. We worked with over 1000 pupils during the year from primary age to A-level, covering subjects from dinosaurs to ecology and evolution. We also ran our first After School Explorers Club.
We also did some TV filming continued our Scarborough Strata column for the Scarborough Review, and launched a new retail partnership, the Dinosaur Company…in fact there are probably a few things we did that have not made this post, apologies to anybody we missed.
2016 is already looking busy with some exciting consultancy projects lined up. We will also be expanding both the number of events we run, and the range of topics and themes we cover. On the schools side we see 2016 as a very important year and will be working to develop this side of the business. All of these plans will need even more hard work and the support of everybody who works with us. There will be some announcements very soon but look out for, short-break holidays, some star-gazing, birthday parties, forest & beach schools and much more, and to go with all this some new team members and a new website…see you in 2016!
